Masters coverage

DirecTV’s special deal to show the Masters on five different channels does for golf fans what NFL Sunday Ticket does for football fans, and I don’t think I’m overstating things when I call it a great step forward for sports on television.

The satellite provider is showing the regular ESPN Masters feed in high definition on Channel 707, highlights from today’s earlier rounds in high definition on Channel 708, Amen Corner in high definition on Channel 709 and Holes 15 and 16 in high definition on Channel 710.

And then there’s what you see above, which is a picture I just took of my own TV screen. That’s Channel 706, the Masters Mix Channel, which constantly shows the leaderboard on the left and the other four Masters channels in smaller boxes in the right and center of the screen, meaning you can monitor everything. Bonus: The four channels show their commercials at different times, so you can easily scroll around with your remote and avoid them. The Masters Mix is absolutely incredible.

DirecTV will keep this in place through all four days of the Masters. Kudos to DirecTV, CBS, ESPN and Augusta National for making this happen.
